Outrun the Sun, Inc. Research Scholar

The Organization
Outrun the Sun, Inc. was established in 2004 to increase awareness of the risk factors for melanoma and to raise funds for medical research for new treatments and cures for the disease.

Vision
Outrun the Sun, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation committed to supporting clinical research that will contribute to the prevention and treatment of melanoma and other forms of skin cancer. Each year, funds are set aside to support research of promising young investigators, whose careers in science show great promise and who demonstrate potential to make substantial contributions to the field. The OTS, Inc. Research Scholar Program is intended to permit these individuals to remain at their own institution and undertake their work.

Support
Research refers to a wide range of activities, from those designed to produce knowledge (basic research), to applied clinical and translational studies.

In 2007 two awards of $10,000 each will be made to individual(s) or entities whose proposals:

  • Focus on new or emerging problems in the prevention of treatment of melanoma for which research is urgently needed
  • Can be substantially undertaken within a one-year period; and
  • Make clear that funds will be used to directly support the investigator’s current research initiatives.

Recipient Responsibilities
The successful applicants will be designated Outrun the Sun, Inc. 2007 Research Scholars. This designation, along with the award carries with it certain responsibilities:

  • Scholars must indicate on all publications that arise from research carried out during the year that their research “is supported by an Outrun the Sun, Inc. 2007 Research Scholar Award;”
  • Scholars will be invited to Indianapolis to present an overview of their work to an appropriate public/professional group (separate funds are set aside by OTS for travel support); and
  • Scholars must submit a final written report at the end of the year (or 12months from the date of the award) to OTS.
Application Criteria
  1. Applications are sought from individuals at academic institutions in the United States. While applications are especially sought from applicants at medical schools and biomedical research institutions, applications from other health science schools also are welcomed.
  2. Applicants must have an advanced degree (e.g., M.D., Ph.D.) Applications from tenured faculty will not be accepted.
Application Procedures
  1. Proposals should be no more than 5 pages (single spaced). A separate one-page budget must be included, detailing the use of the funds. No indirect funds will be provided.
  2. Proposals must be accompanied by a cover letter and a current curriculum vita for all individuals who will use OTS funds.
  3. Proposals must be accompanied by two letters of support. At least one of these letters should be from the applicant’s supervisor/mentor/lab director, etc.
  4. 4. Five copies of the proposal and accompanying materials must be postmarked by March 1, 2007. Applications also may be e-mailed. Electronic applications will not be accepted after March 1. Proposals may be mailed to Outrun the Sun, Inc. 2815 East 62nd St., Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46220 or e-mailed to Outrun the Sun, Inc. at anita@outrunthesun.org.

Review
All applications will be reviewed by an international science advisory committee and will be assessed on the basis of the scientific merit of the project, originality, and the extent to which the proposed project reflects the goals of the OTS Scholars Program. The successful applicant(s) will be notified no later than May 2007. If no applications are deemed worthy, they review panel has the discretion not to make an award during any given award year.
